Overview

  • The Singapore Science Park has over the years gained a reputation as South East Asia's foremost address for research and development (R&D).
  • Tenants in the Science Park include Sony, Exxon Chemical, Silicon Graphics, Lucent Technologies, British Petroleum, Seagate Technology International, Centre for Wireless Communications, the Institute of Microelectronics, the National Science & Technology Board and the National Computer Board.
  • The objective is to provide a focal point for research, development and innovation in Singapore and the region.
  • To make it more responsive to market conditions and the needs of R&D companies, the management of the Science Park was privatized in 1990.
  • Since 1982 when the first company moved in, the growth of companies in the Singapore Science Park has been tremendous.
  • In 1994, there were 117 companies while in 1997 there were a total of 226 companies.
  • The largest group of companies in the Science Park comes under the field of Information Technology followed by those in the Electronics field.

Human Resources

  • Currently there are more than 7,000 research engineers and scientists as well as support staff working in the Singapore Science Park.
  • The majority of employees working in the Park have a basic degree, primarily majoring in Computer Science, Science and Engineering.
  • Approximately 52% of the employees in the Park have a basic degree while 16% have a Masters degree and 12% have PhDs
